

The university’s forensic science program is one of the oldest in the nation. Cal State LA is organized into nine colleges that house a total of four schools and approximately 50 academic departments, divisions and interdisciplinary programs, offering a variety of majors. While Cal State LA previously operated on the quarter system, the university transitioned to the semester system starting in fall 2016, with each academic year now consisting of two 15-week semesters. Cal State LA has a student body of 26,342 as of fall 2020, which includes 22,566 undergraduates, primarily from the greater Los Angeles area, and 3,776 graduate students. In fall 2018, Cal State LA received the 5th-most applications of any CSU campus for incoming freshmen, and had the 4th-lowest admission rate. Cal State LA offers 142 bachelor's degrees, 122 master's degrees, and four doctoral degrees: a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in special education in collaboration with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership, a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and a Doctor of Audiology (AuD). The following colleges meet monthly to share ideas on how to develop and improve programs. The Bay Area Community College Consortium (BACCC) includes the thirteen community colleges in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area School Districts and California State Universities. STEM, Title V and Guided Pathways projects are well under way and will support students interested in teaching with a variety of Service Learning and Field Experiences being offered to Gavilan students. The Education Futures funds partnering with Strong Work Force Funds (CTE) will connect the many grants Gavilan is currently working on. Gavilan College has received Education Futures funds for our TPP program in May 2018. The Education Futures Project provides funding aimed at launching a statewide effort to incorporate Teacher Preparation Pipeline (TPP) programs throughout California Community Colleges. Support is offered for students selecting to work with Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. Students may select working with children in infant/toddler programs, early childhood programs, Transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten through high school as well as college level programs. This program is designed to support students that are interested in working with students from birth to college level programs. Mission: The Teacher Preparation Pipeline program is designed to identify future teachers and give them an opportunity to start their career pathway to teaching at Gavilan College.
