At first it looks like Music Maker will be brilliant for that, but then, surprisingly, it isn't. Some people will want to do their own remix by bringing in samples or stems or acapellas from other tracks, and then applying their own beats underneath.

It's a little bit counterintuitive in parts, but if you've got the patience to get used to it, you can get your own decent-sounding compositions running. Although the range of synth instruments isn't all that great- just 6 VSTs- there's a wide range of effects and a good amount of control over them, and you start getting at least somewhere in the direction of making your own tunes. The more adventurous ones will start digging into the VST instruments and composing something, and this is where Music Maker is actually surprisingly good. For that use, there simply aren't enough samples- essentially there are enough ingredients for one or maybe two tracks in each of those styles (at a choice of 7 different pre-defined pitches) but that's it, beyond that you'll just be remixing the same thing, and ultimately it's not your song- you're just remixing library samples from a cheap sequencer. If you give this to most teenagers, naturally what they'll do is use one of the existing soundpools (80s, chillout, deep house, hiphop, rockpop and techno), drop some samples on a timeline and get all excited that they've made a record. Music Maker has clearly been under development for a job of years, and it has shedloads of interesting features, but ultimately it's still at the budget end of the range and is more like a toy than the piece of kit you need to get a club smash hit. It's like Garageband, it's like Ableton Live, it's like Dance eJay, and so on- that timeline-based music construction approach which modern-day kids understand intuitively and which leaves classically trained musicians scratching their heads. Magix's Music Maker has elements in common with many bits of DAW kit.
