It sounds like you don't really understand this process. WAY cheaper, way better sounding (they have nasty phase artifacts and mic placement is extremely unflexible) and way more space-efficient to use reactive loads and IRs. If he is using load boxes he most likely is either using IRs or a not nearly as good sounding sort of "speaker emulation" which is nothing more than selective EQ. (anyone not getting a great sound this way is lacking in the skill to do so) As far as I know he does not use any form of IR's and if you know what you are doing you should be able to get a great guitar sound without using them.

He uses real amps driving hard into the load box and he knows how to record it. Jemusic wrote batsbrew is very much into using the speaker load box in the proper way. I like to record the sound at the end of the effects chain if any before the signal hits the amp and speaker, and the of course the mic'ed amp and speaker cab which is often the most often used sound for me.Īnother option is to put the whole amp and speaker in a box and seal it all off to the world and record the sound loud inside the box itself. I find that later on with some really great guitar and speaker simulators can create some excellent sounds. I usually like firstly recording the dry sound that comes out of the guitar itself using a DI.

Personally I have recorded many guitarists and I have a method that works well for me. No reason I guess what you cannot use them in conjunction. (anyone not getting a great sound this way is lacking in the skill to do so)īut the idea of using an IR could be interesting as well. I think there are links to them from the Suhr Reactive Load web page.īatsbrew is very much into using the speaker load box in the proper way. He alone is responsible for more converts to IRs than anyone else. If you really want to see the power of this kind of setup find the YouTube videos featuring Pete Thorne. Wall of Sound will be the easiest and quickest way to get up and running for a trial. That way you can try all this out without spending any $$$ to see if you even get good results with your load box.

Best to just download NadIR (it's free - not just a demo - so no reason not to) and download the free IR sets from Ownhammer and RedWirez, maybe get the free demo of Torpedo Wall Of Sound. Using Open Air will technically work but it will be clunky. The advantage of the Jettenuator though is that it can be used live with your own speaker cabinet as an attenuator whereas with the Suhr you need other equipment ($$$) to pull it off in a live situation. When I returned it and bought a Suhr Reactive Load it was like night and day.

My first attempt at all this was with a Radial Headload Prodigy and my results were very underwhelming. Your results will be mixed using IRs with that type of load box. The Jettenuator is just a resistive load device.
